Malcom hurriedly plays the river card, the Queen of Spades. "Blast'em all!" he exclaims. "I needed a 4 for my inside baby straight!" He hurriedly throws the cards and chips into their box and deposits his empties in the trash before following Gren (and any other players) to the elevator. He stashes the poker gear in his locker and puts on his personal suit with armor and 4 patchs already in their pockets. He slings his weapons satchel and debates for a moment on whether to lug the rocket pack.

"Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it," he mumbles to himself before half dragging it into the hall. He waits for the elevator, then makes his way 'down' to Engineering 1 where he stashes the rocket pack in storage locker 7 before strapping himself in the seat at LB III (seat H).

"All set cap'n," he calls over the com-link. "I'm set up on aux LB 3 in case you need me."

Malcom finishes his preparations by removing his weapons from their satchel and attaching them to his body. He dials his rifle to setting 20 and the pistol to 10, all the better to make a lasting impression on any would be boarders.

"Twenty credits says that the class 12 tub is a freighter reconfigured as a weapons platform. Can I call 'dibs' on their disruptor canon?"

Malcom flashes a grin to his teammates.

As the Morning Glory begins maneuvering, Malcom flips his station's control switch to "accept", activating it and allowing for automatic transfer of control from the bridge or the computer. He attaches the quick release umbilical for the IHADSS (Integrated Helmet And Display Sighting System) from the chair to his helmet and activates the MTTAI (that's the Multi-Target Tracking Array Interface), giving the tactical display projected onto his visor. Malcom has 360 degree visibility around the Morning Glory simply by moving his head and swiveling in his chair. He may not have control of a weapon (yet), but at least he'll know where the targets are.

Thinking out loud he exclaims "Frag, the sim became reality?!?" Meanwhile, he will attempt to dial in the radar scope and help establish positive ID on the inbound craft as they appear. He turns to Maria, "Sounds like a classic pirate formation, could be a pair of marauders and a booty hauler. Waddaya think, do those class four craft look anything like 'vettes to you?" (any chance we can make that determination from here?)

He thinks back to a time not too long ago when he was tangling with a real pair of pirate corvettes back in Theseus. One of them managed to squeak in behind them, vaporizing his flight leader with a searing blast from the deadly cannon.

"Trying to figure that out now," Maria replies, as the radar goes active.

"But," she adds, punching up the feed from the forward cams,"you're probably half right, passive sensor telemetry on the two smaller birds matches the electromagnetic spectrum information we have on their corvette-class vessels. The big ship, tho, is probably a heavy hitter, either a carrier or a full-up cruiser."

"They know the 'vettes alone won't be enough to take us," she adds," not with our two assault scouts, and certainly not 25 hours out from Pale."

"They may or may not know about the torps this tub's carrying," she then remarks. "If they do, it's one more indication that big ship's a warcraft of some kind, and...."

She leaves that last hanging, praying very, very hard, as she studies the radar and visual information.

Gren quickly dons his spacesuit and armor like an old pro and no sign of that stiffness he walks with. Gren then double checks everthing, suit on and pressurized, armor strapped on properly, rocket pack secured properly, snags a dozen patches, his med-kit and auto-pistol with ten clips ammo as well as 2 extra life support. HE than proceeds to the auxiliary bridge double time.

Upon entering the bridge, Gren askes "Any one up to capturing a couple o' pirate ships? We do get to keep any booty we take."

B'Looone dons his spacesuit and armor as quickly as he can, and proceeds to the auxiliary bridge to join the rest of his team. He makes a point to stand out of the way of the pilots who are busy assessing the situation, and remains near the doorway in case his engineering skills are needed elsewhere in the ship.

As you get suited up and into stations on the Auxiliary Bridge, you hear various members of the Morning Glory crew calling out readiness as they man their stations throughout the ship. As you move through the halls you notice an abundance of maintenance and combat robots moving about the ship looking like they are headed to pre-programmed positions as well. Once everyone is in postion, Lee's voice comes over the radio circuits. "Beginning depressurization. Hope everyone's seated comfortably, here comes the extra gee's." With that you feel the increased pressure as the main engines roar to life pushing you deep into your acceleration chairs. You watch the force meter rise, 1.2 g ... 1.5 g ... 2.0 g ... 2.5 g and finally leveling out at 3.0 g, crushing you into your chairs as you realize the ship has some extra horses under the hood.

Looking at the displays you see that the trailing ships have now closed to about 320,000 kilometer and have about a 8,000 km/minute speed advantage but are only matching your acceleration. Looking at the displays, you realize that you are still about 30 light minutes from Pale and even if an alert was transmitted immediately, the bogeys will catch you before you even get a reply. You're on your own for this one.

Just a couple of minutes later and you start to get radar returns off the vessels as they slowly close the distance. Just as you start to make sense of the readings a voice, which Leo recognizes as Kimber's, calls out on the open circuit. "Positive ID, two Streel Raven class Corvettes and .." with a bit of puzzlement in her voice, "... a UPF Courageous class Light Cruiser."

"How, by the Elders, did they get their hands on a UPF Light Cruiser? This is getting ridiculous." Terl snaps into the comm. "Okay, team, now we know what we are up against. Let's let them get a little closer, show 'em we have teeth, and encourage them to go pick on someone else." You notice as he says that, that the two assault scouts start to drift off away from the Morning Glory and the corvettes mirror their actions, drifting away from the cruiser in an attempt to keep the scouts from getting around them.

Time drags on under the crushing acceleration and then it happens. The corvettes have been drawn away from the supporting fire of the cruiser and the assault scouts turn an pounce. Pulling a hard 180 degree turn and kicking their engines up to full thrust the scouts double back outside of the firing arc of the corvettes' laser cannons and come in for a straight up shot with their assault rockets. The hunters have become the prey and with only their batteries for defense, make a desperate attempt to fend of your escorts. One of the batteries grazes the Excalibur's port engine and you notice that the assault scout's thrust is dropping. The Assault Rockets and Laser batteries from the Courage and Excalibur lash out. One of the batteries just misses its target but the other three weapons slam home. The lead corvette disintegrates before your eyes as the Laser Battery slices off an engine and the assault rocket plows right down the fuselage of the ship. The second assault rocket scores a hit on the other corvette, damaging it but not destroying it.

"Put some extra thrust on engines four, five and six and let up on engines eight, one and two as you make the turn, Mike." You hear Grenix voice call over the comm circuit. You are crushed even deeper into the acceleration chairs as the Morning Glory executes a move you didn't think possible. Pulling a 180 just like the assault scouts the super freighter races back towards the cruiser out of the firing arc of the cruiser's Disruptor cannons. "Fire at will," Lee calls out to the gunners and the Morning Glory exchanges a full broadside with the cruiser. Two of the laser batteries rake across the cruiser's hull while the third misses and the torpedo is destroyed by interceptor missiles before it can get close enough to do any damage.

The energy weapons from the cruiser lash out with telling effect. The laser battery scores a hit on the engines and B'Loone sees immediately on his station that they have knocked out half of the ships maneuvering (-1 MR). The electron battery rakes across one of the gun emplacements knocking out one of the Morning Glory's laser batteries and the proton battery rips through the hull in the third cargo bay leaving a 20m long gash through the hull metal. The comm circuit immediately comes to life again, this time with D'narr's voice, "B'Loone, use your console there in the aux bridge to take control of maintenance bots k3-7, They are already in bay 3. Get them working on that hull breach. I'll direct some of the bots from bay 2 down to help as well."

Light cruiser, huh? Malcom thinks. Maybe a crew mutinied?

"I'll call that one a push," he says to his troubleshooting teammates with a grin. "It's not a reconfigured freighter, but it is most definitely a gun platform. Oh, and I still have dibs on the disruptor."

Malcom continues to evaluate the tactical situation and as impressive as the Morning Glory is, it's just not up to a fight with a cruiser. ... Probably. You must always factor luck into the equation. Still, there's bound to be up close fighting before this is over. Just then, an idea strikes, thanks to Gren's and B'loone's conversation.

"Hey," he says to those in the Aux Bridge. "Any of you former UPF types ever been on a cruiser before and know how to find the bridge from the outside? If we get grappled, what do you say to scooting over, blasting a hole through their hull, and taking out their command team? B'Loone, you got enough D-19 for that?"

"I'm on it!" B'Looone voices into his comm. It doesn't take him more than a few seconds to familiarize himself with the controls in front of him. "K" series bots. I've used them before, but like everything else on this ship I'll bet they've been "upgraded" a bit. He directs the maintenance bots to repair the hull breach, while trying to assess what other systems have been damaged by the previous attack.

"What?" B'Looone's thoughts were so far away from boarding actions that he was taken off guard by the question. "Uh, I don't have any explosives handy, but I'm sure that the Morning Glory has as much as we would need. I like your idea, though, if they get that close, count me in."

He returns his attention to what the maintenance bots are doing. They're proceeding a bit more rapidly than I would have expected. Yup, upgraded laser cutters, and they're coordinating themselves better than they should: a few software upgrades, too.

Leo was duly impressed by the Morning Glory's ability to maneuver. Still this was one of those times where he didn't have much to do, so he did his best to stay out of the way

Let's see, B'Loone to make a hole, me and Sebastian on primary knock down with Maria, Gren and 'Ting as secondary - probably Leo too. What am I forgetting? Reinforcements. Better get the computer whiz to shut down the elevator ASAP. Secondary controls? Engineering. Have to start a secondary plan to get there if Leo can't lock out the computer from the bridge.

"Leo, if we have to do this, we'll need you to hack the cruiser's computer QUICK! I mean before the shooting stops. Lock out the elevator and change the security codes to the engineering override ASAP. Better look in the the Glory's reference files to see what they have on UPF ship systems and layouts. What else am I missing folks?"

"Try this one for size," Maria remarks. "Hack into the cruiser's computer, reprogram it a little, and tell the vogging thing and its bots to take out anyone not working for Obar Enterprises, then dock with us on autopilot. That way, we don't have to blow holes in anything, the fleabag in charge has a shiny new toy to add to his fleet, and, maybe we can find out who turned over a perfectly fine Spacefleet ship of the line over to a bunch of pirates, cos, aside from the Moraes, no UPF crew's ever mutinied in the nearly seventy years the Federation's been around...even in that case, rumor was the person responsible for that was in cahoots with the worms."

"Which is another possibility," she realizes. "Leo, if you go diddling with that ship's comp, you might want to delete its self-destruct program from memory."

Hearing the attitude lady talk about the Moraes like she really knew something about it irritated him to no end, "Bill Terry was a good man until the worms got their hands into his mind, and none of the rest of us had anything to do with the mutiny except for stopping it."

"Nice analysis," Sebastian nods to Maria. "A Federation grade cruiser, now that's very interesting. The pirates must be carrying extra troops, and well trained ones at that, if they could manage to overtake something like that."

As the invaders begin their attack, Sebastian instinctively wrenches at the controls. "Blast, I hate feeling helpless. Too bad this bird doesn't have a pair of star fighters in its bay."

BD Cerridwen wrote:"Hey," he says to those in the Aux Bridge. "Any of you former UPF types ever been on a cruiser before and know how to find the bridge from the outside?

"I haven't, but standard UPF design protocol is to position the bridge in the fore. Mid-section is typically the gunnery platforms and crew quarters, that's where we'd meet the most resistance. But I like your proposal, anything beats sittin' around waitin' for 'em to find us." (cheesy application of a classic Han Solo line)

Seb ponders the situation briefly, and then calls out on the open interlink channel, "Anyone else find it a coincidence that the 'vettes are Streel models? I mean, right here in their home system where Obar Enterprises is experiencing pirate issues? Sounds like Streel doesn't like the idea of OE muscling in on their turf..."

"Why wait to be grappled? the best way to defend our vessel is to force them to defend theirs." Gren pipes up. "And yes, I can probably get you close to the Aux. Bridge from the outside. First priority is to lock out all auxiliary access points. These are Main Bridge, Engineering, Captain’s quarters, first mate’s quarters, Chief engineer’s quarters and the marine detachment commander’s quarters. These points all have at least some access to some if not all the ships primary functions. Then lock out the turbo lifts.” Gren pauses for thought, “I wonder if we can pull a spook on them?” he muses out loud. He looks to B’Loone “B’Loone, can you do a controlled overload of the engines, make it look like we’re trying to blow the ship? I know on Civy ships this works like a charm, they all run for the life boats and life pods. But a military vessel with a military crew, they may not spook so easily.” Again Gren pauses in thought then states out loud, “Wish I had some of those beanbags right about now.”

"Do you really think a 15 second call is enough time for any astrogator to compromise such a fundamental part of a spaceship?" Leo was pretty sure she just hadn't thought it through. Such a glaring security hole would make space travel next to impossible.

Malcom grins even wider. Yeah, this is what it's all about. Gelling the team through andreline infused bickering.

"There's a lot of fine ideas floating around here, and any good plan needs to be flexible. Gren, I like leaving early as much as you do, but our chances to get there together will be better after we're grappled. Shorter range, less chance of the Glory leaving without us. Still, we should head over as soon as it is viable, and I love the spook idea. This may be a crew of thugs rather then military types. It seems we're all agreed on that so far... well almost all." He shoots a wink at Maria and adds a touch of teasing tone to his voice for his next sentence. "The first modification to the plan is to put Maria in a nice, safe launch where she can recover any of us who go drifting. Once we're in the cruiser and have Leo settled, it's his show. And B'Loone's. The rest of us will be on security. I don't doubt that they'll recall the better part of their own assault team once their senors pick us up on their hull. Folks, it's going to get hairy - no offense Gren." Malcom shoots another wink at the old Yazarian.

B'Looone turns to face Gren with (what for a Dralasilte would be) an evil grin. "I can make any machine explode. Setting the engines to overload is easy, but getting them back under control if they've been damaged could be a problem. We won't know for sure until we get there and I can assess the state of their engines."
