OOC:
Concerning Deiter Gerard, I sent an email last week and haven't heard back as well as he hasn't posted since before the game began so I'm assuming real life has probably ambushed him. We'll transfer him into the crew when he gets back with us. for now Niss will remain on the ship and run Ajax's findings through the medical computer. I plan to do a little editing of ajax's investigation and repost it.

On the ground the first time:
"Lieutenant, " Tanar asks after hearing his information on the Cloverdale, "could we get a copy of that schedule? Do you have it in your files? If it was that regular, we might be able to work out it's orbital track fairly accurately assuming it was keeping to the same schedule. That could seriously reduce the volume of space we have to go looking in to try to locate it." Assuming the Marine base has the data, Tanar will start working up a solution back on the Pelican until they get the call to head back down to the surface with the medicines.

On receiving the "suit up" order to head down to the Streel base:
Tanar checks his gear ("on ship" list on character sheet) to which he adds his envirokit (I guess it's the tricorder now), maybe his geo-sciences skill may come in handy. He also clips on an extra power beltback, just in case and grabs 4 tangler grenades replacing two of the power clips on his battle gear with two of the grenades and placing the extra two clips and two grenades in his pack.
The Laws of Physics will be enforced.

BIC AJAX: Medical relief mission, thinks Ajax as he plans his kit. Space suit, patches, spare LS pack, med-kit (minus the medscanner and the heavy autosurgeon), at a minimum. Of course, he's already wearing his issue skein suit and combat harness. He opts for a triscanner, gas mask (in case the condition proves to be airborne), a water pack and a day's worth of rations (in case foodborne), and an electrostunner in the place of his laser pistol. He also packs 10 power clips, loading one into the stunner. To top it off, he takes a flashlight, a notebook and several pencils, and a radiophone. He checks with the Captain to get a schedule of when the Pelican will be within range of the radiophone.

Before boarding the shuttle, Ajax visits with Spacer Niss. "I'm about to head down. I'll use my tri-scanner to sample the air and relay the readings back to you, along with any med-readings that I take. I've got radiophone 4 with me, they said the number is in the Pelican's comm system, so we can confer. Also before I leave I’d like you to run a complete scan as a base line." It won't do the ship any good for Jax to bring some foreign virus on board.

BIC Alyssa:
"Sounds more like corporate clinical trials gone awry," Lyssa says when she hears of the supposed outbreak of mine sickness.

The Captain shakes her head.

"Why is it the corporations are at the bottom of everything with you, MId?" she asks.

"Cos they usually are, sir," Lyssa replies, remembering to end her answer with a "sir."

"Either them or the Feds," she adds,"and if they aren't, then they're mixed up in it somehow, sir."

The Old Man dismisses her, and young Syrrano has the anti-tox and more e-rats loaded by the time she enters the Golden Hind's cockpit, the shuttle undocks from Pelican and heads towards the Streel mining camp.

Midshipwoman Blue set the shuttle down dead center on the designated landing pad. She ordered everyone to stay put while grapples were attached and the whole pad began to descend beneath the surface. She wanted to grouse about scratching the paint on her bird but it wasn’t likely the robotically controlled grapples would leave a mark. Once the nose of the shuttle was clear two massive doors began closing overhead. The hanger doors clanged shut at the same time the shuttle came to rest in a 60m diameter hanger. There was a blast door large enough to admit vehicles and Lyssa could see into the hanger control booth level with her cockpit. She suspected that the expense for this sort of hanger was only sent for the convenience of VIP corporate types. A green light beneath the control booth flashed signaling full air pressure. After checking her own gauges she gave the all clear.

A mob scene greeted the marines when the blast doors opened revealing armored riot troops holding the miners aside to allow a hover car to enter.
Lyssa told the enlisted marines, "No throwing rations at them like they were dogs, or I'll personally turn you into airbags for hover cars, savvy?!"
"Good," she replies, before they have a chance to...just because Streel treated them like they were subhuman didn't mean the Royal Marines had a right to.

"However," she adds, noting the cordon of Streel Security shocktroops round the starving miners, and the Velia Clan Yaz leading them,"while our orders are not to start a war, by the gods, I expect you to end one, if need be."

As she powers down the shuttle and disembarks, she notes that the Streel thugs are all armed with gyrojet and automatic pistols and rifles, and they have MGs set up, hellbent on re-enacting Hamilton's Massacre.

Ike conferred with Alyssa, “I’ll leave you in charge of off loading and shuttle security. You can have Ventura and Slayerian. Tanar and I will confer with the admin and see what they have for us on the missing ship. Spacer Syranno has his assignment at the infirmary but I don’t want anyone going anywhere alone so Grelude will go with him. We all check back in an hour.”

“Alright! Ventura, Slayerian, your with me. Let’s start off loading these rations.”

The quartet of Ike, Tanar, Grelude and Ajax approached the hover car. Waiting for them were a human and a dral.

"I'm Norcoran, special assistant to the Administrator," says the dral. "And this is our security chief, Richard Yennech. We under stand that you have some medicine for us? We’ll have our people take all the cargo for you."

“Ike responded, “We do have the medicine but our orders are that our medic will check out the situation before we release the anti-tox.”

“Ohh, that wont be necessary, we have a fully qualified DOCTOR handling it, you won’t need to bother.”

“Our captain’s orders are that the anti-tox isn’t to be released till she OKs it.”

“Well I don’t want to put you to any trouble…”

“No trouble at all. Please lead the way.”

It was clear the dralasite wasn’t happy about the marines going in to the main facility but the security chief maintained a poker face through the whole exchange. They all rode the hover car down the 1km long tunnel that was wide enough for two way vehicle traffic.

At the infirmary:
Grelude and Ajax were escorted by two security troopers to the infirmary but were forced to introduce themselves to the Doctor S’lenick
"Good to meet you. I'm Spacer Ajax Syranno, medic. I understand that you have a strange illness going around."

The Doctor seemed nervous at the presence of the security troopers so Grelude began to engage them with meaningless talk to give Ajax a chance to sound out the doctor.

While pulling up medical records for Ajax the doctor typed a sentence on the computer screen, “No matter what you find it must be MINE FEAVOR,” then erased it.
“Perhaps you’d like to tour the ward.”

On the ward one patients was moaning, “Maureen,” over and over. Others were scratching and twitching and few were unconscious and looking like death warmed over.
The Vrusk doctor gave a quick run down of several cases while Ajax takes notes. When finished, Jax interviewed and scanned the patients asking each of them several questions.

One red eyed miner responded in a whisper, “It’s the Maureen.”

Ajax was expecting to find a heavy metal toxin but what turned up on his scans was a plant toxin. He sent Niss the results and was surprised by what the ship’s medical database reported.

Niss read the database entry to him, “The cannabis poppy is a genetically engineer species of plant. Chewing or smoking the leaves produces a powerful euphoric high but the plant can be refined into marroine by any half competent chemist with minimal equipment. Marroine is injected intravenously and produces and even more powerful high.
The cannabis poppy affects humans, yazerians, dralasites, and ifshna. Its effects on vursk and humma are mild like coffee with no apparent side effects. There is no data on its effects on the osakar.
As the drug is metabolized in the user’s body it produces a toxin that can’t be metabolized. The usual coping mechanism of most races’ bodies is to store the toxin in fat or a fat analog. This makes it a ticking time bomb till the time fat is burned for energy. At that point the toxin floods the system and though a poison it behaves as a disease. The disease state varies depending on drug use, body mass and amount of toxin stored in the fat cells being burned. It attacks the nervous system and can lead to death.
Treatment is anti-tox but this will only deal with the toxin as it is circulating in the sufferer’s system. Full detoxification is lengthy and requires hospitalization.”

After filling in the captain, Ajax adds, “I think the doctor here is under some pressure to not admit what it really is.”

“Alright, Jax, go ahead and release the anti-tox and don’t make waves for the doctor for now.”
Ajax continued to question the patients as he helped administer the anti-tox but only turned up the name “Gout” as a link to the drug supplier. One of the patients was aware that “Gout” was using a holoscreen for a disguise.

Tanar and Ike had to force a meeting with administrator who was distracted, red eyed and scratching. Norcoran did most of the talking for him and he agreed to everything Norcoran said. It was obvious that they weren’t going to get anything from him. So Tanar requested and received the filed flight plans of the Coverdale.

OOC: Unless anyone has anything they want to pursue on the surface the captain will be calling a conference on the ship.

1. Because the miners have been on short rations is the reason for the toxin release in their bodies. They are clearly suffering from withdrawal (red eyes, some of the twitchiness, and scratching) they will recover if they can begin to store fat again but will only be cured at a full hospital.
2. Tanar’s review of the coverdale’s flight data reveals that the filed flight plans differ from the observations made by Lt Jeffers and his staff by 5 to 8 days. He has a rough search pattern charted.

Ajax is thinking fast, knowing that he only has so much time before the goons get itchy and force him back to the Hind. He hovers over the patient who provided the "Gout" lead.

"This one's got the most serious case of mine fever I've ever seen," he comments just loud enough to be heard by the guards, even over Grelude's belching voice. "He needs to be evac'd to Clarion immediately! Grelude, let's get a stretcher ready."

He will repeatedly claim to have only the concern for the miner's health, and never deviate from the Mine Fever cover story. Since Clarion has no real authority on this rock, Ajax will threaten involving Star Law unless the patient is allowed to leave.

"Well, obviously the administrator isn't in charge here," Tanar says to Ike once they are back on the shuttle. "He seems to be suffering from whatever this mine fever is and Norcoran seems to be running the show. At least we got the flight schedule for the Cloverdale so it wasn't a total waste."

OOC: Well I didn't expect this but what the hey- be for warned that I will apply what consequences I think appropriate so you haven't yet got away this.

IC:
Grelude taking his cue from Ajax immediately grabs and tosses a folding stretcher at the two security guards with the order to set it. He launches into a diatribe of insistent orders to keep them moving in the right direction and prevent them from thinking to com higher command. [PER check 34] He manages to keep them too off balance to reach for a com.

The vursk doctor tried to lay a hand on Ajax’s wrist and whispers, “This will never succeed.”
The patient, who looks visibly scarred and says, “No, no, I’m feeling better, really.”
Sensing the wheels are about to come off this little fiasco, Ajax loads telol into his hypo spray and injects him then rapid fires five questions at him- what’s your name, where were you born, how old are you, favorite color and how do you feel. Literally with in seconds the patient is passed out.
Leaning in close to the doc he whispers through gritted teeth, “You’ll go along with this or I’ll report my finding to both the MSO and the Royal Medical Review Board and since you reported a bogus diagnosis to the Royal Marines while we were responding to an emergency you’ll be lucky to keep your license to practice medicine anywhere.”

Suddenly the vursk announces, “You’re right I believed he’s slipped into a coma.”

In no time the two marines and the two guards are each holding a stretcher handle and moving at a dog trot down corridors toward the vehicle park. Grelude had set a punishing pace that the security guards were barely able to maintain. The vursk doctor had run ahead and was opening door and using his authority to keep people from asking too many questions.

At the vehicle park they loaded onto a flatbed ground truck with Grelude behind the wheel and tore off down the 1 km tunnel to the shuttle hanger. Grelude slipped on his helmet and commed Ajax, “Are you out of your fraghole mind? Did you run this by the Exec or the captain?”

OOC:
1. I suggest you talk fast and convince an officer to commend you for initiative and back your decision.
Most officers might not react well to this sort of escapade but then they might cut you some slack after being under fire with you at the Roost and there seemed to be an attitude among them that you got ripped off on the medal situation so that could help.
2. I'm still considering several possible reactions by the corporation to this and haven't settle on one yet- till I see how you all play this.
3. I already pre-determined how much information you could have gotten out of this guy so I how it doesn't seem anti climatic after all this.
4. The floor is now yours: though I'd be careful about making it a tactical situation.

Re: Chapter 1: Wanderings In the Dark

Postby BD Cerridwen » Thu Oct 08, 2009 8:20 pm

OOC: Expect the unexpected. And be happy that my brother isn't playing. :D

Ajax dials up Alyssa Blue on the chronocom. "Midship-person Blue, we're coming in hot with an urgent med-evac. Request immediate boost. Please have Spacers Ventura and Slayerian ready to assist at the ramp in vac suits or gas masks."

He switches his attention to Grelude. "Back us right up to the ramp so we reduce exposure to the crowd. My med-scans indicate that the patient will soon enter the airborne contagious phase of Mine Fever." As soon as he says this, he dons his gas mask. If the guards are in the truck, he suggests that they do likewise. "It's a good thing that you're a Vrusk, Doctor S’lenick," he adds. "You're immune to the airborne form."

Grelude backs the truck up a far as the security goons allow, but they don't get as close as Ajax would like before the security chief gets suspicious and forces the truck to halt. Ajax opens the back as Ventura and Slayerian appear from the Marine ship suited up as directed. "Stand back please!" shouts Ajax.

"What the blazes do you think you're doing??" roars Mr. Yennech.

"Sir, this man is very sick," Ajax replies while signaling Slayerian to help Grelude unload the patient. Jax takes position in front of Mr. Yennech, well within his personal space, forcing an unconscious back step by the security chief. Jax continues speaking loudly enough for the general population to overhear. "And likely highly contagious. He needs a hospital immediately. Since he is a Clarion Citizen, it is my legal duty to do everything within my power to save him."

OOC: The rest of the plan goes like this, Ajax will keep Slayerian and Grelude moving slowly towards the ship as he and Ventura block the security chief. Ajax will keep talking fast, continuing with his legal Duty to Act and peppering in the Mine Fever cover, including reports of hundreds dead from it on Pale and New Pale with thousands more affected. Worst thing since the Blue Plague. He hopes to confuse Yennech enough to have him wondering if they made up a disease that turned out to be 'real'. Or make him realize that he has failed to hide the true nature of the illness from the Marines, but at least they are willing to play along.

Only if all else fails will he drop the Mine Fever cover. Then he will report that the med-scans have already been transmitted to Clarion, so there is nothing left for Yennech to hide. He will suggest that Streel already has enough trouble in White Light without starting another incident with Clarion. It is to everyone's benefit to just let them go. Under no circumstance will Ajax take an aggressive posture. He will be firm, but polite, giving Yennech every opportunity to save face and avoid an ugly incident.

Only once they are safely on board will Ajax worry about what the captain might think. Right now, he only cares that this patient may have valuable information concerning illegal drug trafficking in the White Light system.

Miners freeze in mid movement as they're lifting cases of rations, guards tense, and all eyes drift toward security chief Yennech. Yennech's face freezes for a moment before it cracks and emits a belly laugh.

He half turns his head and pitches his voice for the Streel employees in the hanger, "Hear that? Mine Fever is highly contagious!"
The whole hanger erupts in laughter.

Under cover of the laughter Yennech steps into Ajax's space and says, "Ok fool, you and I both know that that those miners are suffering from nothing more than their own indulgent foolishness but I'm not about to indulge you in your foolishness. Your going to return that miner if you want your ship to leave this hanger without an incident."
His gaze drifts to the doors above Golden Hind before continuing, "Those open with this controller."
He steps back, smiles, then tosses Ajax the controller, "Go ahead and try to leave."
Yennech turns and walks away while issuing an order to a deputy.

Suddenly guards stop allowing the non space suited miners to leave the hanger and force them to remain in the hanger.

Moments latter, Ike's com is beeping.
"Mr. Clanton, would you mind telling me what exactly is going on down there? I have the head of Streel's security complaining about kidnapped miners and threatening to dump all of their sick miners on us. I want you all to clean up that mess and get back up here, ASAP."

Ike, as the XO, attempts to take charge of the situation in a manner that will keep Yennech's security forces from murdering us (Game over :( ) and allow Ajax to gain more information from the mine/doctor. He wants to make it clear to Yennech that he is in charge, knowing Yennech has some kind of command structure of his own and should recognize authority. Ike's team will not act in haste.

Ike dons his helmet to respond privately.
Excuse me Mr. Yennech, "Sir. Local security is opting for a heavy handed approach to our "intrusion". We need to take charge of a miner for the next few hours - he might have a lead. I'll report back in 1 hour."

Removing helmet, turning to Ajax with a firm tone to impress Yennech
"Mr. Syranno, please assist Doctor S’lenick in caring for this miner. I feel it's our responsibility to ensure he wakes in good health before we leave. Leaving with personal is not an option at this time, Mr. Syranno."

Turning to Yennech, with that look of "My crew ment no harm, we only want to help."
Mr. Yennech, would you mind if my remaining crew waited in the infirmary?

I'm not sure who heard Alyssa. I don't believe our choms are set on speaker.

With the vursk doctor's help the miner is revived after two hours.
At first he's groggy then angry.
"Bloody, vogging hades," he screams at Ajax, "You just signed my ticket back to Clarion. They're gonna assume I'm a vogging whistle blower now! I needed this job!"

The XO asked him, "What were you telling Spacer Syranno about someone named Gout?"
"Vog you!"
"Look, I'm sorry about all this, and to be sure there is a ration of crap to go around for those at fault here but, please tell me who is Gout?"
The miner sat sullenly for a moment, "He's the dealer in cannabis poppy."
"Does he work for the corporation?"
"Hah, everyone here works for the corporation but he's from Clarion by the sound of him. He may have even spent time on POPS from the way he referred to it. I think he has some deal with the Cloverdale's crew as he always had fresh leaf for sale after they came."

OOC: anyone else want to post a question to this guy before you leave him behind?
Other wise Tanar needs to work up a search pattern while the captain deals with a butt chewing.

1.Yennech isn't answering any question from you and he isn't allowing you out of the hanger

2. The doctor gives you to believe that the corporation is covering up the drug use out of embarrassment. They simply deny it exist on Wandren and that comes from the administrator down. While he's aboard the shuttle tending to the miner with you he confirms that he thinks the administrator us a user to but of the more potent form that is injected.

"So that's how it goes," Lyssa remarks to herself and to the Streelie doc, "That pederast monkey bastard out there's willing to space a bunch of civs just to cover up the fact you worthless band of Kurabanda voggers feeding them marroine. Least that explains how you miserable bunch of wanna-be shaft vaccers managed to keep your hooks in."

Maybe even the motive for the ag ship's disappearance, she thinks to herself.

Using the Hind's computer, she links up with the Pelican, using her(the Pelican's) subspace radio to upload information of Streel's own brand of mine fever that they're inflicting on Clarionites into the Royal Marines',the Royal Guards' and the RCMC's net sites, plus the site for Lu's publication and a couple more public sites she can think of.

With luck, it will rapidly go viral.

OOC: She doesn't have all the facts, but this is the (Inter)net, babies. It doesn't have to be totally accurate, just inflamatory....

"Maybe Gout," she thinks aloud, as the treasonous miner grouses and reluctantly cooperates,"gets his fresh leaf from the Cloverdale."

Musing over what Jeffers had said earlier, she adds,"they are an ag ship, and from what little I know concerning marroine, it can be grown pretty much anywhere, in a relatively small space, and an ag ship would have the necessary gear to hothouse enough of the plant to feed the planet's population."

"Oh," she says sweetly to the miner,"you probably won't be sent back to Clarion."

"Death," she adds,"is the usual fate for traitors."
"So, no more running. I aim to misbehave."

"Lady, your bat house nuts! The corporation didn't feed us nothing they crack down on the drug trade when it suits them. Most of us just turned to alcohol or drugs to relieve the boredom. Streel's money is made is made in banking or did you never read the corporate entries in Zeb's guide. They use the mining here as an excuse to stay in system after all that trouble years ago. Traitor! You're a vogging lunatic since when did the Royal Marines start recruiting at the asylum? Get me out of here. Your all freaking off the hook."

OOC: The miner will no longer talk to you all and he and the doc leave.

IC: The Streel security and the miners leave the hanger and depressurization starts immediately forcing Ventura and Slayerian to rush to close the hatch. The massive landing pad/lift is immediately in motion rising toward the opening hanger doors. The robotic grapples release before the lift has stopped moving and the shuttle rocks a little as the pad locks into place. There is no communication from the base's flight control.

Back at the ship:

The captain is livid over personnel trying to send half baked reports back to Clarion to stir up trouble and NCO's who don't report back to her and act on their own initiative creating an incident where the vogging Streelies can tout the heavy handed treatment of them by RM which they've been saying for years but now they have video to prove it. Syranno catches the usual punishments handed out on a naval craft and is put to work with scut work. Blue has been given a direct order to not discuss this incident with anyone on Clarion till the tour is finished.

Alone in the conference room with IKe, she gives him a less volatile butt chewing but warns him that this sort of thing cannot go on as this is not the "wild frontier anymore."
"I'm willing to grant some latitude due to the nature of our emergency deployment but this sort of thing is exactly why the RM discontinued the posting some many midies to one ship straight out of the academy. I don't want to muck up anyone's record with letters of reprimand but I will if forced to do so. Hell I hate Streel as much as the next marine but we can't behave like loose warheads without good reason."

On the bridge Tanar has been number crunching the data concerning filed flight plans and observed departure and arrival times from Wandren for the Cloverdale and has tried to narrow down the field of search for the missing Cloverdale. [Astro sciences skill check is 48% or less roll= 03] Taking a wild guess that if drugs are a factor in the Cloverdale going missing then the closest approach to Planaron Ore Processing Station might be the best place to look. Plugging in variables into the computer and training the telescopes in that direction he had a "hit" within a few hours. At maximum magnification, the computers had spotted a glint of light off what appeared to be a ships hull in slow tumble.

"Damn!" the captain said slapping Tanar on the back, "That's pretty much one in a million that you'd find that at this distance. It may be nothing more than some old debris or space junk but it's in the general vicinity of where and when the Cloverdale went missing. Lay in a course to micro jump and bring us to a zero zero intercept of the object but continue trying to refine data to confirm or exclude that object as the Cloverdale."

Over the course of accelerating to 1% of light speed Tanar was able to confirm first that is was a ship and eventually that it was an ag ship in slow tumble. With only five registered ag ships in system it was a high likelihood this was the Cloverdale and the jump was made.
Once in the vicinity of the tumbling ship Tanar was able to refine imagery of the ship and identified damage to the drive section consistent with beam weaponry and one of the domes had a breach. As the Pelican matched the drift of ag ship its registry became visible, SCS Cloverdale. The energy sensors show little to no heat, the engines have been off for a while, and there is no trace energy registering on the EM spectrum. The work pods are missing on deck 5 (same deck as the forward hatch) as well as the ships launch on deck.

OOC: RL is calling this morning so I'll get up some diagrams latter tonight. Tanar located a 15 year old magazine article with deck plans for the modular freighter hull that the ag ship is based on but only for the forward section; a copy of those plans are in PDF as the Castor Class freighter over at http://starfrontiers.us/downloads/3444
You can all update these deck plans to your body comp on your combat harness but there is no way to know if the Cloverdale conforms to those plans since they're 15 years old and the ship is modular anyway. Update your character sheet with equipment carried (there are 5 of you and its easier if you do it once than I do it 5 times plus for the npcs) Some or all portions of the ship could be depressurized (at least one dome is) and its 99% likely life support is off line. You have a forward and aft hatch and a hull breach in an ag dome for entry points as well as fiddling with going through the work pod hatches or the launch's hatch (which are not air locks and will have explosive results if there is atmosphere on the other side.

Your mission is to clear the ship, check for survivors or bodies and investigate what happened to the ship.
Of priority is information on who attacked it, was the Cloverdale indeed the source of the cannabis poppy.

I need to know what your plan of attack will be here; where and who is going in, the Pelican wont dock with the Cloverdale directly so Alyssa will have to pilot the Pelican's launch or the Golden Hind across. The only other way to get across would be allowing Ike or Dudd to pilot the workpods based off their engineering experience by default despite not having the space vehicles skill which I will allow but it does seem silly when you have other means. Also which NPCs do you want along (its not so critical they go in as chronocoms allow me to still use them as a voice but you may wish to have Niss or Dudd for their skills Spacer Dudd is an engineer's mate and Niss is a combat medic same as Ajax. I'm assuming all PCs are going and an Npc can be used to guard your vehicle.

like I said I'll try to get a visual diagram of the outside of the ship up latter tonight. and you have limited deck plans available to you.

Happy Hunting.
A second year delivery driver who still could not back up his van told me, "Its Not that I Cant back it up a van its that I Dont want to." Funny I use to say the same about sex in high School.

"Yes, Captain, whatever you say, Captain," Lyssa replies, regretting not a whit of her actions, cos she knows she acted in the best interests of the Crown, that Streel is the enemy and deserves whatever heavy-handed treatment loyal subjects of the Crown give it, and to Hells with what some corporate-loving political hack whose career has plateaued thinks.
