I'd hoped to post one more leg of the adventure before I took off but it's not going to happen. I'm leaving in an hour or two to take the family up to Yellowstone and won't be back until Friday, Aug 15th. So, you can continue to post PC interactions or just wait until I return. Sorry about the delay.

OOC: Okay I didn't get back until the 16th and have been catching up on RL. Here we go.

BIC:
Within a couple of minutes of your new assignments you hear the hiss of air refilling the decks and gladly shed your spacesuits for the added maneuverability. After about 20 minutes more of repair work the crew on the engine deck manage to get some of the engines on-line providing enough thrust and maneuverability to resume your deceleration towards Pale (1 ADF & 1 MR). Almost as soon as gravity kicks back in, Malcom and Gren notice the energy sensors light up with new contacts at extreme range in the direction of Pale. The computer classifies the contacts as two pair of Class A and a trio of Class B atomic engines. From their relative spacing positions, you guess a pair of assault scouts and a frigate or destroyer. As they close within radar range the larger ship is positively identified as a UPF frigate.

A few seconds later the radio crackles to life. "TSSS Morning Glory and escort, this is the UPFS Invictus, we have you on sensors now. Please provide vector towards the Rampage". Lee responds giving the trio of UPF ships as much information as he can about the cruiser's last known direction and speed. "Good hunting," he adds as the trio of ships flashes by with the frigate under full thrust and the assault scouts matching its acceleration.

Shortly thereafter a report comes in from the Courage. "Morning Glory, this is the Courage. There is nothing left of the Excalibur, very little of the structure even remains and there are no survivors, not even bodies. As far as we can tell, it seems the port engine failed and detonated, ripping the hull to shreds and triggering a failure of the starboard engine which also detonated incinerating whatever was left. I'm sorry. We've lost some good friends today." The announcement is followed by several minutes of silence the ship as the crew come to grips with the details of their friends' passing. One by one the crew return to work getting the Morning Glory fully on-line once more.

Another hour of hard work and the freighter is as fixed as it will be until you get to port. The masking screen launcher is functional but useless as all the water was vented in the torpedo hit and one of the laser batteries is still off-line but the engines are fully functional, the computer is fixed and the hull patched up. After all the work is done and you've had a chance to clean up and stow your gear again, Terl asks you all to come to the large conference room.

Once you are all gathered he begins. "Okay, that was most likely not a random attack. The two corvettes bore the markings of a new pirate organization we've been monitoring for the past few years. This seems to be their logo and was painted onto the wings of the corvettes." He brings up the following image on the screen.

"They call themselves the Star Storm Society. They have remained fairly low level but with recent events in the Liberty system, StarFleet presence has shifted slightly away from this end of the Frontier towards White Light, Theseus and Liberty and the pirates have gotten a bit bolder. In fact they've gotten quite bold to have made off with a UPF Light Cruiser. I intend to get to the bottom of that when we reach port," he says with more than a hint of steel in his voice. "We don't know where their main headquarters are but the have at least one major base here in the Truane's Star asteroid field. A raid on that base was and still is your planned second mission. We only located it a couple of months ago and have been monitoring activity there to try to determine the size and scope of the base.

"Just about the time we were finishing up repairs here on the Morning Glory, we received a distress call from our mining operation on New Pale. It seems they have come under attack as well. At this point that makes the message about two hours old and we haven't heard back. We have to assume the worst. Accordingly, your first mission has been changed from a simple cargo delivery and pick up to Search and Rescue. We want you to go to the base, find out what happened and locate any survivors. Your original cargo was an explorer, a pair of combat robots, a pair of security robots and a pair of mining robots. The mining robots have been replaced by an additional pair of security robots. You can find specs on both the combots and secbots in the ship's computer. You may still want the explorer or we can swap it out for another vehicle or vehicles, it is up to you.

"The Dart is ready and waiting at Pale station. We'll be arriving in 35 hours at which point you will transfer directly to your ship and head out. No rest for the weary," he adds with a grin.

"I'd say pretty good. We got contacts - atomic drives - inbound from Pale. I hope it's the cavalry.

Later...

"My condolences for the Excalibur's crew Terl," Malcom says solemnly. He pauses for a moment of reflection, then turns to the rest of the team. "I think one of you rock tossers ought to get yourself a grenade launcher and a bag of tanglers. If we find and can capture a few of these Society boys, it might help out the boss. I'm sure Gren's got a pocket full of Telol. As for me, I'd like to get a Power Back Pack and a Sonic Stunner for this job."

Maria listens to what the head fleabag has to say, up to them having 35 hours before they have to transfer to the Dart directly, choosing the moment Malcom starts to run his stupid mouth to walk out of the conference room nad back to the aux bridge for more sim time.

Sebastian places an open palm over his chest. "I never got to meet any of 'em, but I was looking forward to working with them one day aboard that fine craft."

Sebastian opts to log in some more sim time on the auxilliary bridge. Gonna have to get sharp for the new mission. Maria seems sharp enough to work with, just gotta learn to read and anticipate her moves so we can work together in a more fluid manner.

Malcom watches the two pilots leave. Just before the doors on the turbo lift are closed, he says just loud enough for his voice to carry, "Add a leash for Maria and Sebastian to our wish list too."

Leo listen the loss of life and friends was always hard news to hear. Still he didn't know any of them so he kept his mouth shut allowing the others to say what they felt needed to be said.

Once the subject moved on to the pirates and possible attack on the mining facilities he asks, "Can we get a layout of the mining operation and access codes? The codes might be changed by the time we get there, but if we have to take it back by force every little bit helps."

The nature of his new employment is hitting B'Looone a little harder than he thought it would. He knew what he was getting into when he first responded to the ad (at least he thought he did), but thinking about going on dangerous missions isn't the same as being shot at and watching your friends die. It's easy to ignore the danger you're in when you're focused a job that people are counting on you to do. It's not so easy when you're sitting in a room full of people talking about those who just died. I wasn't one of them, but I could have been. It's not as if this were the first time he'd been through such an action. I just have to wrap my head around my new role: it used to be that 'trouble' found me often enough, but now I'm the 'trouble' that's going to find it.

"I'd like to see the spec.'s on those 'bots as soon as possible", he says to Terl. "I can't help but wonder: the ship that attacked us probably expected this battle to go a little differently. If our base was attacked by the same group, would they be expecting that light cruiser to be their transport off world? I'm just wondering if we should expect that they've cleared out by now, or if they'll still be hanging around when we get there."

"What he thinks with," Maria replies,"is doubtlessly so small, not even Leo would be interested in vaccing it."

With that, she heads for the aux bridge with the Minotaur in tow.

"I for one wonder if we have a weapons mount for the explorer, so we can mount Sabation's chatter box, could come in handy."

"Even if it doesn't, B'Looone ought to be able to rig something up in route. We should probably start off with a fly-by recon in the Dart. If one of those combat bots can handle the pod-laser, it might be a good idea to have the dart give us air cover too. That is, if we can talk the pilots into sticking around.

B'Looone couldn't help but chuckle at Malcom's joke, since he had, in fact, tinted himself green for that day. "What is it you humans say: 'inquiring minds...'?"

"And there's another thing: if this was no random attack, as Terl said, then how did they know when and where to find us? It's not like they could have their stolen UPF cruiser just hanging around waiting for us: that would have been much too dangerous for them. If they deliberately came after us, then they had to have known ahead of time when and where we would be. Unless we happened to catch them in the middle of doing something else, and they just jumped at the opportunity to attack us. But, if that is the case, then what were they in the middle of? Hence my original speculation that they were the transport for the group that attacked our mining facility."

"I hate spy hunting," Gren says with a sigh "to covert for me. I like 'em down and dirty, get in, do your job and get out. But I do agree with Malcom's suggestion of a flyby recon first, as for the air cover, if it is a minning operation, we could be underground." Gren pauses for thought "If that don't bring back memories of tunnel ratting after rebel factions. I do think it would be best if the Dart stayed airbourne after dropping us off, less chance of it getting caught on the ground. I vote for Sabation to remain onboard to pilot while the rest of us go to ground. I'd rather keep Maria where I can see her."

(OOC: Since the robot specs are in the equipment section, I'm assuming that Terl provided them as B'Looone requested)

BIC:
Malcom looks over B'Looone's 'shoulder' at the specs. "Nice. Plenty of tanglers, Level 4 and 5 voice response, combat 'bots have IR detection, I can even steal one of their energy packs if we decide to leave one on the Dart. Hm. I'm a little concerned about the decision hierarchy in the case of conflicting commands. B'Looone, you seem the most level headed -" Malcom shoots the dralasite a quick wink and grin as he continues, " - sometimes literally. If you have time, you should tweak their programming so your voice is the override, and probably Leo as the number two. I can help if you need it."

"Excellent. With the robots firmly under my control, we can take over the... uh, I mean, uh, yeah, that sounds like a good idea; I'll do that."

(OOC: I'm a noob at Star Frontiers, so I don't know what kinds of tricks the robots can get away with in combat. My ignorance prompts the following IC comment)

BIC:
B'Looone says to the room, "I hate going in with 'standard' equipment; everyone knows about 'standard' equipment. I want to go in with a few surprises. Anyone have any good tricks that they'd like me to program into these 'bots?"

"With their computer link, we should probably make sure that there is an alarm whenever their control panel is accessed or their primary commands modified. Something that will page your chrono-com with the When, Where, and Who data. It's not fun when your own robots turn on you. As I recall, the Dart has excellent robotics management software. It ought to be a cinch to put that together. Other then that, I like the idea of teaching the combat 'bots how to para-glide. We probably won't use it on this mission, but it is a handy skill to have." Malcom thinks for a moment, then gets a mischievous grin. "Ooo! How about a vocal sub-routine so they always call Maria 'Darlin' ' or 'Sweetie', and Sebastian 'Benji' or 'Spot' or 'Fido' or some other common pet name. That would be hilarious!"
